Romance Fails in Fiction Choice Tag

I recently came across Tasya’s Tag, and found it a fun thing that I wanted to try out, especially as my first tag.

So, this tag is basically romance fails in fiction, or just romantic misfits.

Originally started by Kate @ Melting Pots and Other Calamaties in 2017, I’ll agree that like Tasya, I too am being scrooge at Valentine’s, but with Valentine’s week starting, and me again being ‘in my room, making no noise and pretending that I don’t exist‘ without a partner, I’ll have my amount of fun – even if it is in form of listing out romantic fails xD.

The Rules:

  • Please PINGBACK to Kate @ Melting Pots and Other Calamities.
  • You can choose ten romance fails from ANY media you like: books, movies, anime, manga, T.V shows, or Webtoons. You can even mix them up if you want.
  • You can choose funny fails or serious ones; for the serious ones, phrase it humorously. Remember, this is a fun tag! It’s not meant to be serious.
  • Mention who’s who in the fails. (I.E, who fails and who is the recipient of the failure). If there isn’t  recipient, per se, just state the couple (or non-couple).
  • Optional: Rank the failures from least extreme to most extreme.
  • 5 failures at LEAST.
  • Tag as many people as you want, but at least one person.

So, let’s get started, in no specific order.

1. Jason & Piper – Rick Riordan’s Mythological Universe

Image result for Jason and Piper

Last I checked, you were my awesome girlfriend Piper. Unless something has changed since I was out?

Jason Grace

[The Burning Maze Spoiler]

The basis of their very relationship was fake memories, planted by Hera. Had Hera not played the big game, they might have never been introduced to each other ever. All their special memories, including the first kiss, were all fake. And, how can a relationship work on fake memories, that too of the daughter of the love goddess? Good thing they broke up once their life was stable and the Great Prophecy was out of their minds, by realizing it wasn’t meant to be.

Things change. People change. Jason and me – we started out oddly. Hera kind of messed with our heads, made us think we shared a past we didn’t share.

Piper McLean; The Burning Maze

2. Andy & Erin – The Office

Image result for Andy and Erin

I begged Dwight and Jim to give me Erin for Secret Santa. And I decided to give Erin the 12 Days of Christmas. Is it my fault that the first eight days is basically 30 birds?

Andrew Bernard

[The Office Season 8 & 9 spoiler]

Erin is a very sweet, innocent and easily influenced girl. Whereas Andy was somewhat selfish, and short-tempered. Regardless how much Andy cared about her, to the extent he even lost his position as the Regional Manager, they didn’t seem to fit well with each other. Erin deserved better. Though they were certainly better than Erin & Gabe, but Erin ended up with Pete, and these two made a balanced couple.

3. Natasha & Bruce – Marvel Cinematic Universe

Hey big guy, sun’s getting real low.

Black Widow; Age of Ultron

Now this is one I found on both Kate’s and Andrea’s tag, because I guess it is something everyone agrees on.

It was awkwardly written, and the ‘Sun’s getting real low.‘ thing could’ve worked just as well, had they been shown as good friends. They just did not have the chemistry you would expect Natasha would share with her boyfriend, provided her first appearance in Iron Man 2.

4. Howard & Bernadette – The Big Bang Theory

Image result for howard bernadette

I couldn’t have imagined,

How good my life would get,

From the moment that I met you, Bernadette.

Howard Wolowitz

Okay, don’t kill me for this, I understand how a womanizer like Howard changed and got into a stable loving relationship after meeting Bernadette, but in my opinion, their relationship has got quite toxic lately. With Howard having a troubled childhood, one would expect his wife to be loving towards him, but Bernadette is all bossy and makes fun of his interests, and rarely cares to lend an ear. There is love between them, and she did change Howard as a person, but Howard could have found someone better.

5. Daisy & Ward – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Image result for daisy and ward

Skye: Did you just give me a compliment?

Ward: I – no, I made a comment.

Skye: A kind one. Did it physically hurt to do that? Do you need an ice pack?

[Ward smiles]

Skye: Wow! A compliment and a smile.

Not only they seemed to have an age difference, and experience difference, it just became even more weird after *the* twist in Season 1. They didn’t have the romantic vibe working out either. Had they developed them better as Ward being her Supervising Officer only, it could’ve given an even stronger feel of betrayal. The later scenes in which Ward wanted to get Daisy on her side, or was not able to hurt her felt out of character. An agent like Grant couldn’t have let himself be influenced by his emotions this easily. The same thing could have carried out in some other manner.

6. Deepika & Karan – College Romance

Karan: Beautiful roses… for the beautiful girl, Deepika…

Deepika: Peeche Rakh Do.

Karan: Obviously. Peeche hi toh rakhte hai roses. [Pause] I like you.

What was it, if not toxic? Sure, Deepika has got heck of an attitude, and it does get better in later episodes, but the way she treats Karan in the initial episodes is just plainly wrong and unfair to Karan. Them being in an open relationship doesn’t amends how Karan is neglected and used. And, heck, Karan also lets her use himself.

7. Vision & Scarlet Witch – Marvel Cinematic Universe

Image result for vision and scarlet witch

Scarlet Witch: Vis? Is it the stone again?

Vision: It’s as if it’s speaking to me.

S: What does it say?

V: I don’t… I don’t know. Something… Tell me what you feel.

S: I just feel you.

Well, Vision is an AI, powered by a stone which gave Wanda her powers. How screwed up is that? Yes, I will agree that the scene in Avengers: Infinity War, where Wanda was destroying the Mind Stone in Wakanda was touching, but the relationship as a whole feels a next level of cliche, since the beginning.

8. Leo & Calypso – Rick Riordan’s Mythological Universe

Image result for leo calypso

I figure the universe is basically like a machine. I don’t know who made it, but it chugs along the way it’s supposed to most of the time. Sure, little pieces break and stuff goes haywire once in a while, but mostly… things happen for a reason.

Leo Valdez; The House of Hades

[The Trials of Apollo Spoilers]

I know many people ship them, since its literally a match made in heaven, after death, but to me it feels a highly forced couple. I wasn’t enthusiastic about the idea of them being together in the first place, and their dullness in The Dark Prophecy made me like them even less.

Its maybe because of a theory I had, and still love – that Leo doesn’t come back. He actually dies, and lives on Ogygia with Calypso forever. That way, it makes more sense. Its a little hard to believe that none of the seven, who were a part of the great prophecy, didn’t actually die, after battling the mother earth herself. As much as I love Leo, I rooted for him to stay dead, to make it more realistic and to stick to Percy’s initial words.

Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways.

Percy Jackson; The Lightning Thief

Sorry, I got drifted, but I guess, that’s the gist of why Caleo doesn’t sail from Ogygia for me.

9. Raj & Cinnamon – The Big Bang Theory

Okay, this is just for fun. And, this gave quite many funny one liners, like in the game Emily or Cinnamon. Kinda taken from the Ross-Marcel thing in starting seasons of Friends, but works perfectly.

I want you to know that the bed seems so lonely without you in it.

Raj to Cinnamon.

10. Jack & Riptide – The Ship of the Dead

Image result for jack and riptide

The important thing is Riptide’s here now, she’s beautiful, and she’s met me! Maybe the two of us can … you know … have some private time to talk about, er, sword stuff?

Jack; The Ship of the Dead

Okay, just to make it 10, this is something I never knew I wanted. But, I would’ve preferred it as a bromance. It was hard getting to know that Riptide, or Anaklusmos, is actually a female. Two weapons I thought would make great brothers, ending up with one flirting with the other was, well weird, but exactly what you can expect Riordan to come up with.

A pen sword. That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.

Jack; The Sword of Summer

Jack: See, Magnus? I told you it wasn’t stupid to carry a sword disguised as a pen!

Magnus: Jack, I never said that! You did.

The Ship of the Dead

Well, thankyou Kate for starting this unique tag.

I’d like to tag Sumedha and Paridhi to share their list of romance failures.

  1. Great answers! I’ve never been into Jason and Piper, out of all the couples in the universe, they are the most meh to me. It doesn’t stop me from crying though, but mostly because I feel a loss of a friend :/

Well, since we were getting to know Jason and Piper during the time Percabeth was at its peak, how could they have stood anywhere. 🤷🏻‍♂️
And, out of a sudden I’m reminded, I should’ve added Tyson and Ella to the list. Totally forgot about them. They do seem cute together, but, they don’t really hit it off according to me. 😐

I’m quite excited about how others take the news. We do have a hint that it’ll be in Camp Jupiter, with both Percy and Annabeth being there, and well they were crying according to Magnus. October seems too far away to see them all again. 😅

Hey, I gave the spoiler warning. Should’ve kept your impulse in control.
And, about Joey-Rachel, well, let’s just say I want to see how things shape up further. Haven’t completed that season yet.
